Simple Tips to Deal with Stress in Adolescents

What is stress? According to some psychologists such as Rice (1987) said that stress is when an individual feels tense and stressed due to event factors and stimulus from his environment. Atkinson (2000) states that stress refers to events that can harm an individual's physical and psychological well-being. This condition is referred to as the cause of stress and this individual response to this stress state is referred to as the stress response. And according to Chaplin (1999) Stress is a situation that causes a person to feel depressed, both physically and psychologically.

Stress can affect everyone regardless of age. So it's no wonder that many teenagers are experiencing stress. But, there is no need to worry because actually stress is a normal thing that has been experienced by everyone.

One development expert, Santrock said that adolescence is a very difficult time. During this time, many teenagers face a lot of changes in their lives. These changes are the need to adapt to physical and psychological changes, search for identity, and form new relationships including expressing sexual feelings.

This change, indirectly requires teenagers to be able to control themselves well. However, because these changes occur rapidly, many adolescents experience manifestations of stress, including depression, anxiety, diet and irregular sleep, and various other things. These problems will also greatly interfere with their physical and emotional health, and can also damage their motivation, personal relationships, and ability to succeed. Plus, today's college campuses charge many tasks that can make it difficult for teens to manage their time.

Well, here are some tips to overcome stress in teenagers:

  • Take care of yourself
  • You can do it by getting enough sleep, consuming healthy and nutritious food, and implementing a clean and healthy lifestyle.

  • Tell the complaining of those you trust.
  • Telling stories with people you believe can reduce the burden or stress you face. Who knows if you're calmer.

  • Playing with a beloved animal
  • Interacting with animals, especially pets, can help your body to release the hormone oxytocin and lower cortisol levels.

  • Doing your favorite activities
  • For example, such as shopping, going to the cinema, visiting recreation, painting, and other things that can make your body become calm or relaxed. Remember not to do activities that even make you more depressed.

  • Exercise
  • In addition to making your body healthy, exercise can also make you calmer. Many sports that you can do such as running, yoga, swimming, and others.

  • Reduce the use of gadgets
  • Research at the University of California found that checking e-mail at all times can cause stress. Highly active internet users are also 5 times more prone to depression. So when you feel stressed, it's a good time you reduce contact with gadgets.

  • Listening to music
  • Listening to music can stimulate your mind to be calmer or relaxed.

  • Me Time
  • Taking your time to pamper yourself (me time) can be one of the tips to overcome stress. Sometimes, your mind is full of pressure, the muscles of the body are relaxed, well, therefore you need me time and do relaxation of the body.

  • Worship
  • Activities such as ablution, sunnah prayer, remembrance, and listening to the chanting of the Holy Qur'an can also calm you when stressed. In addition, this activity can also bring you a reward.

  • Visiting or discussing with a psychiatrist
  • If you feel severe stress and almost lead to depression, it's good if you consult a psychiatrist to get professional treatment.

    Everyone has a unique and different way of dealing with stress. Our lives are full of stress that can cause stress. Then we need to recognize the things that make us stressed and how to overcome them. Stress therapy is something that requires commitment and continuous effort.
