Overcoming Heartburn due to Stress Without going to the Doctor
Heartburn is not only caused by late eating, but can also be triggered by excessive stress levels.
At first I couldn't believe this, considering I was the type who always ate on time and tried to avoid the odd foods that caused stomach churn. However, after I pulled back on some recent events—many jobs with uncertain deadlines, children's birthday weeks, closed with holidays with extended family—apparently I didn't realize that I was exhausted and stressed. Two bad combinations that quickly undermined my health.
So, how do I immediately diagnose that what I'm experiencing is heartburn, instead of a normal stomach pain? Coming home from vacation, I felt pain in my heart and this taste continued after I finished eating lunch. In addition, I felt nauseous to vomit several times.
This pain in the stomach is actually relatively mild, does not require me to do tirah baring (bedrest). However, the ulcer I felt became quite disturbing after lasting more than 24 hours and only subsided shortly after swallowing the ulcer medicine.
Realizing this was not an emergency, I decided to make an observation at home and setting 7 days was the maximum deadline to visit the doctor if the pain I felt continued.
In fact, this heartburn can be resolved within 4 days! Here are some of the efforts I put in until the pain completely disappeared:
1. Identify the causes of stress. A little stress, pressure, or anxiety is good to make us want to achieve something better. But, if most, this will affect our health. In women, the first part that is attacked is usually the stomach. In my case, as soon as heartburn strikes, I immediately find out what's been bothering the mind all along—and it hasn't been acceptable with airy chest. By realizing that (rather than denying it), I invite body and soul to work together toward healing. Instead of looking for scapegoats.
2. Avoid caffeinated beverages. As a big fan of coffee, this is the hardest thing! Since the first attack I felt, I realized, that for a while the coffee was not something that was wise to do. Tofu, caffeine in coffee can trigger a rise in stomach acid.
3. Take heartburn medication. Be sure to take heartburn (antacids) before eating. Make sure this medicine is available on your desk for short-term treatment. Since I first felt the pain in uluhati, I immediately plugged the gas to the nearest pharmacy to buy it. Because, it turns out that the ulcer medicine at home has expired since three years ago. This means it's been a long time since the stomach was stricken with ulcers the last time. Although ulcer drugs are sold freely in any drug store, make sure we do not take them for a long time to avoid the adverse effects of this drug.
4. Eat healthy in small portions, but often. I still eat rice, lettuce, cucumber, and tomatoes. However, eat it with warm chicken soup. I also avoid vegetables and fruits that are high in gas such as broccoli and apples, fried foods, and spicy dishes. So, what you eat and how much you eat should be completely taken care of.
5. Keep light activity. When I'm suffering from heartburn, I try to distract myself by doing things that make me happy. One of them is to keep light activity. Instead of lying down all day.
6. Ikhlas. Well, you could say this is the main key of all cures of diseases, especially ulcers. After knowing what stressors I was doing, I tried to accept that I was trying my best, but some things—many things, even —remained out of my control. Ikhlas means surrendering to God Almighty. By being sincere, the body, mind, and soul will become balanced and in harmony with each other. This condition allows the body to heal itself and take care of health itself.
After doing all that, the heartburn disappeared by itself without having to go to the doctor's room. This pain should also be a reflection material for us to be better able to control stress, and clean up the remnants of negative emotions that often accumulate in the heart.
So, do not wait until the heartburn becomes chronic. Immediately explore the cause and overcome when the first time pain is felt in the stomach.
